I was converted to Torrontes at a closed-door wine tasting at Taninas Wine Tastings in Mendoza; the idea (popular in Argentina) is that you go to an apartment for food, rather than a restaurant. My first experience with Torrontes had not been a good one – I was persuaded that it could be delicious by Piatelli Reserva Torrontes, pictured below (sadly unavailable in the UK). Moet & Chandon own Terrazas de los Andes, as part of their Argentinian operation. I reviewed their Chandon Fizz earlier this year (available in Majestic). I was fortunate to be given this bottle which comes from Salta and is grown at over 1000m in the foothills of the Andes. It elicited ‘Wow!’ from us both. Not cheap – but excellent. If you see it, buy it!
Tasting notes: Pale yellow colour with green tinge. An inviting, aromatic nose. Intriguing first notes of tropical fruit. Intense, delicate, dry. Very long, lingering finish – with a note of dill! Delicious.
