Malbec is the world’s favourite red wine grape and this is down to Argentinian producers like Catena, who produce this good value red for Tesco and their own label DV Catena range which is sold in the UK. Argentina is essentially a developing world country and as such its wines ought to be fairly traded….

Trivento Reserve Malbec 2019 – UPDATE
Sales of Malbec are at an all time high in the UK – and deservedly so; it’s good wine and most of the available offerings are well priced (in the UK at least). The UK market leader is Trivento – owned by the mammoth Vina Concha Y Toro company from neighbouring Chile. Founded 23 years ago, Trivento…
Santa Julia Malbec 2019 – UPDATE
This Malbec bares the name of Zuccardi (albeit discretely) – excellent producers of Argentinian wines. Their wines are produced responsibly, organically and fairly – which is important in what is essentially a developing world economy. The Argentine economy has been turbulent for years. We visited in Autumn 2016 and prices for hotels, food and wine…
Trivento Reserve Malbec 2018 – UPDATE
The Argentine economy has been turbulent for years. We visited in Autumn 2016 and prices for hotels, food and wine were slightly more expensive than the UK. Not any more. The Peso is (at the time of writing in June 2020) worth a fifth of what it was three years ago. Great news if you…
Trivento Reserve Chardonnay 2017 – UPDATE
Trivento is the global market leader in Argentinian wines. We visited the winery in November 2016 and tried their entire range. The UK offerings were mostly retailed in Tesco but they no longer stock this or the Parra Alta Chardonnay – which is a shame as these were excellent value. Tesco still sell their Malbecs,…
Florel Torrontés 2019 – Virgin Wines
Torrontés is an aromatic white wine, similar to a reisling and indigenous to Argentina. Like reisling it goes well with Asian cuisine. In Argentina they refer to Torrontés as ‘The Liar’ because the aromas are misleading. The best Torrontés wines come from the high elevation vineyards around Salta, Argentina – such as this one: https://wordpress.com/block-editor/post/atimeforwine.blog/1767…
Tesco Finest Torrontes
One of the best wines I have tasted was an Argentinian Torrontes which I reviewed here. My love of Argentina and its wines is documented here. Torrontes is known in Argentina as ‘the liar.’ This is because its aromas often differ from the taste. Torrontes is a bit of a ‘marmite’ wine… The worst wine…
Santa Julia Malbec Rosé
I have had this wine twice in recent weeks, as we are in the midst of an actual summer in England, with sunshine and everything, and it’s been very good. I’m a fan of Zuccardi wines, following a trip to Mendoza. The fact that Mendoza produces any wine is pretty miraculous – it’s in the…
Cuchillo Malbec
We visited Mendoza in Autumn 2016 and spent 5 days tasting a range of wine. Located in the eastern foothills of the Andes, in the shadow of Mount Aconcagua, vineyards are planted at some of the highest altitudes in the world – with the average site located 600-1,100 meters above sea level. The principal wine-producing…
Santa Julia Reserve Malbec
Robert Parker gave this wine 91 points. But he’s like Craig Revel-Horwood on Strictly come Dancing (in the sense that he marks harshly, I hasten to add). I’ve scored it 92 – and would add extra marks for an attractive bottle (good for dinner parties & prospective in-laws) but that would be stupid… Tasting notes:…
Finca Las Moras Malbec
The description on their website says that this wine is produced from grapes from San Juan & Cuyo and produced at their winery in Tulum. In other words it’s from a wide region of the Mendoza province – but for the price it’s good wine and goes very well with beef dishes. Tasting notes: Inky…
Trivento Reserve Malbec
We visited Mendoza less than a year ago and spent 5 days tasting Malbec, Torrontes and Chardonnay. Located in the eastern foothills of the Andes, in the shadow of Mount Aconcagua, vineyards are planted at the some of the highest altitudes in the world with the average site located 600-1,100 meters above sea level. The…
