Pinot Grigio is the World’s favourite white wine grape. Is this offering from Virgin Wine any good and in any way different from the vast array available on the UK market? Well, yes. I’ve tasted Pinot Grigios from Argentina and California (good) and from Hungary and Bulgaria (not great) and done comparative tastings with Pinot Gris (supposedly the same – but not). Some of the Italian Pinot Grigio we buy in the UK is a) not Italian and b) not Pinot Grigio – because it is also the World’s most widely faked wine. This Pinot Grigio is from Australia and I liked it.
Tasting notes: It’s appearance is pale lemon in colour. Citrus notes on the nose. Balanced acidity. Some length to the finish. Medium body and a little weight/texture – it’s 13.5%. Citrus and pear notes. Young, fresh fruity. A little fruity intensity, and some complexity.
Region of Origin – South Australia.
Wine Colour – White
Price – £8.99
Where do I get it from? Virgin Wines
Current Vintage – 2019
Producer – Fuse for Virgin Wines
Grape – 100% Pinot Grigio
Country – Australia
Verdict – Good wine and fair value.
Food Pairings: This would work well with pizza, salads and grilled fish dishes – Virgin’s tasting notes suggest mildly spiced Asian dishes – and I’d agree – but avoid anything too spicy as that 13.5% abv would cause ‘mouth-burn’ with anything with serious chilli heat.
