Chapel Down near Tenterden produce English fizz on similar chalky terroir to that of the Champagne region, using the traditional method and the same grapes. Taittinger have bought a large plot of land in Kent. Champagne producers can add 10% of wines from outside the Champagne appellation to their blends and last year Moet & Chandon purchased their entire allowance from Chapel Down. It’s a beautiful place and we’ve tasted their entire range, twice. More reviews here https://wordpress.com/post/atimeforwine.blog/1542 and here https://wordpress.com/post/atimeforwine.blog/2825
Waitrose are wonderful supporters of English wine and stock a great range. They even produce their own in Hampshire. Chapel Down used to be ‘The official sparkling wine of 10 Downing St”, however it is now ‘The Official Sparkling Wine of the Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race’. Clearly the association with Theresa May wasn’t helping…

Tasting Notes: A delicate pale rose petal colour. Hints of hedgerow fruits and strawberry on the palate. Dry, fresh with lively acidity and a fine persistent mousse.
