Flint Key 2018, The Mount Vineyard, Shoreham Kent

This wine travelled about three miles from the vineyard to my house. I’m a great fan of English wines and this comes from a beautiful spot; Shoreham near Sevenoaks – in the ‘valley of light’ once favoured by artists. The Mount tries to offer a ‘vineyard experience’, with tastings and food. Like most ‘hospitality’ businesses, this part of their trade must have suffered in 2020, with several lockdowns and the area currently (unfairly) being in ‘Tier 3’. Their shop and online business continue to trade, however and they have cut their prices.

Tasting notes: An attractive pale lemon colour. Initially some hedgerow aromas and white flowers. Dry, crisp, fresh with lively acidity. Bacchus may not be to everyone’s palate – but if you like somewhat floral aromatic wines or are a fan of Sauvignon Blanc this is for you. At £23 this may seem rather expensive but is comparable in price and quality to Chapel Down’s offerings, which I have tasted and reviewed extensively here – Chapel Down – A Time for Wine.

    I’m a big fan of Bacchus too, favourite being the award winner from Winbirri, but we live closer to Three Choirs and Poulton Estate who also make good ones too. The one you review does seem to be very pricey, a lot more than Winbirri. We are going fully local this year with English wines across Christmas, blog descriptions tomorrow.

        No problem, I have a big collection of Burgundy, we are massive fans of Chablis and Pommard and have good friends in both towns. Just published a book containing most of our French travels over 50 years (sorry, not a “push”,) it’s highlighted on my blogs home page. But I’m a very big fan of English wines too and will have some extended breaks in Kent and Sussex when this damn Covid buggers off! 🍷🍷👍
